ReproductiveHealthcare
For & By Us

At Ubuntu Black Family Wellness Collective, we know all too well that Black mamas and babies dying is a reality built through medical apartheid, social and economic injustice and white supremacy.

We know we must work together as a community to find solutions to the challenges created by a system that was designed to see us fail.

Black mamas and Black babies aren't broken. By working together as a community we can see Black mamas, babies and families not just survive but thrive.

Medical Racism is Real

Many don't know but most Black women can easily believe that the origins of Obstetrics and Gynecology are rooted in the history of white supremacy and misogynoir and little has changed since. When enslaved Africans were still consider a different species, to make slavery more acceptable to white Christians, white obstetricians like J. Marion Simms, and Jean Marie Prevost performed surgeries on enslaved women without anesthesia. Today OBGYNs are still taught racist disinformation, like Black women feel less pain. That being Black alone is risk for pregnancy complications which isn't just wrong, it's a lie.

The fact that only 2% of physicians in American are Black says not only in there racism in how Black women are treated, but that there is a deep-seated belief in medicine and healthcare systems that Black women are magical superbodies that don't feel pain, while at the same time not being capable of being OBGYNs, or that Black women are a threat to disrupting the status the cycle of abuse and neglect that sees too many Black mothers and Black babies, dying during the period of pregnancy and childbirth.

The medical industrial complex was built on the backs of Black folks. We have the right to seek an alternative system of care that is rooted in the unapologetic belief that WE ARE ENOUGH, while returning healthcare back into the hands of the Black people and Black healthcare providers.

Ubuntu Black Family Wellness is a community-based healthcare practice where we offer full spectrum reproductive healthcare in the heart of the community from Black midwives, nurse practitioners, doulas, who know what it is to be viewed as less than in a healthcare system that views us as little more than practice material, rather than a whole person who deserved to be treated the same as any other patient. And that we are not broken. It is not Black race that makes us 2-3 times more likely to die in the year in and around childbirth, is racism. Structural racism, institutional racism, interpersonal racism, and medical racism, are a lethal combination to Black women and babies, but a lucrative recipe for the medical industrial complex.
